It’s called “keto flu” because you feel sick. Makes sense, right? As you know if you have gone through it, it is very unpleasant to go through. Usually it only lasts a couple days, but it can last up to four. When it’s over it is so great. You will wake up and be a ball of fire. You will have incredible energy and great mental clarity.
So what can one do to lessen the impact of keto flu?
The first thing to account for is that you are most likely dehydrated. You need to make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Keep chugging water!
Another thing, which you may not expect, is to eat more fat. Butter, bacon, heavy cream, the works! This forces your body to speed up the transition into ketosis. It may sound insane to do this and you may be afraid it won’t work, but believe me it does!
Manage your electrolytes! When your body is dumping water weight you will lose electrolytes like sodium, magnesium and potassium. In order to re-coop the electrolytes go for chicken or beef broths and take a multi-vitamin.
Go easy on the protein. Protein can be changed into glucose is you overload on it in the first few days. This will definitely slow down your transition. Fatty meats and cheeses are the go-to. Add fats to your protein shakes. It’s very instinctive to eat lean meats such as chicken breasts and fish when you are trying to lose weight. Steer clear of chicken breasts. Unless you are going to wrap that bad boy up in bacon and cheese and lather it with mayo. Now you’re talking.
Keto Flu Summed Up
Let me sum things up for you. Keto flu sucks and it might last 2 to 4 days, but when you get through it you feel AWESOME. Replenish electrolytes, eat lotsa fat, drink a ton of water and don’t eat a lot of protein to lessen the blow of keto flu. It may be tough to get through, but trust me that it is worth it in the end.The benefits of the ketogenic diet are outstanding and worth the sacrifices that are made in the beginning.
