First off, let’s be clear. You don’t want to be eating fast food breakfasts on a regular basis while on keto. You can keep the carbs low, but there are other reasons to avoid fast food as you are probably aware. That said, there are some times where you are in a bind and your only option is fast food.
First off, you can order sides of eggs and sausage at just about any fast food restaurant that servers breakfast. For instance, at McDonald’s you can just order 2 sides of sausage and 2 sides of eggs. It will run you about $4 and it is a breakfast that will get you to lunch.
Taco Bell has an outside of the box idea. They have the naked egg taco. It is a taco that uses an egg as the taco shell. You can grab one for about 8 net carbs. Make sure you add guac and say “no potatoes.” While ordering fast food for breakfast in general, you will need to be saying the words “no potatoes” quite a bit, which can be painful to say.
Subway offers their “sub in a tub.” It’s also referred to as “chopped salad.” You do not have to have it shopped. This may not seem like a breakfast food as it is more like a salad, but they do serve these starting when they open early in the morning. Besides, there are many times you will be doing things that others find strange when you are on keto, so why not do a “sub in a tub” at 8 a.m.?
Really, fast food breakfast on keto is very simple. My best advice is to do some research before you order. There are many times fast food restaurants and chain restaurants in general add hidden carbs to their food. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and keep the MyFitnessPal app handy at all times to make sure there are no carbs in there.
Stick to the basics. Sausage, bacon, cheese, eggs. You eat those things and you will be fine. Always add avocado when you can. If you follow these rules you can keep your head above water while eating keto fast food when you are in a jam.
